It's definitely not a rushed product.

Keep in mind it's quite a different product. Avatar combat is nothing special from what I've heard, but seems like ship combat is awesome. And there's interesting economy model etc.
So the game isn't a direct challenger for some classic MMOs who focus on sword n sorcery. Still, it's like a fresh breeze.

I can't say more because I haven't played it (they are stress testing atm), but did read forums, etc.

Unlike Age of Conan where PvP is grind-based (their devs literary said they love that, and I puked) - in PotBS they said "a cannon ball is a cannon ball" Which means even a small ship can do some dmg. How exactly it works in practice i dunno, but they said they want to make small ships viable as well. In a way, you could say they share my pvp vision.

there is levels in the game so how much does that effect gameplay anyhow? level 10 vs 20 type matches?

As far as I know, the higher your level, the bigger ships you can sail in. But bigger ships aren't always better ships. They just have more cannons. However, what the smaller ships lack in firepower they make up with faster turning. So it is possible for one small ship (level 1) to beat a bigger ship (level 10), but not very likely. And only if the player of the level one is better then the level 10 one. 10 small ships against 1 bigger ship however is an almost sure win for the small ships. Read this article about how exciting ship combat can be.
And I read somewhere that the avatar combat is still being worked on. It is some kind of r/p/s as far as I understand it with 3 different fightingstyles. But ship combat is the main focus.

Yeah, that's what I understand as well. And keep in mind, a lot of pvpers WANT a small quick ship rather than a big ship with big guns, so lots of the smaller ships are more suited to pvp. One of the devs told me they had a goal to have everyone in the game actively involved in pvp before level 12 (which is like 5 hours of gameplay tops to get to). Also, you can get any skill in the game by level 15. There is no inherent level advantage (like level 50 has a lower % to be hit) and a cannon ball fired by a level 12 is the same as a cannonball fired by a level 50 in the same ship using the same skills.

It seems like to me smaller level people will be more independent pvpers or going after merchants and the higher level people will use the big guns for conquest.

And they posted a release date yesterday. January 22nd, 2008. Bit strange timing if you ask me, just after Christmas. But then the Preorder will be on sale starting October 23rd.
